Das Alter einer Person kann in verschiedenen Kulturen unterschiedlich gezählt werden. Dieser Rechner basiert auf dem gebräuchlichsten Alterssystem. In diesem System erhöht sich das Alter am Geburtstag einer Person. Zum Beispiel ist das Alter einer Person, die 3 Jahre und 11 Monate gelebt hat, 3, und ihr Alter wird beim nächsten Geburtstag einen Monat später auf 4 steigen. Die meisten westlichen Länder verwenden dieses Alterssystem.
